Oversimplification

This week, Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa pull together three seemingly disparate topics using the thread of "oversimplification". As a podcast that rests upon critical thinking, this episode challenges listeners with a new definition, thoughts on voter registration, Coach Dawn Staley's allyship, and Scotland's new hate crimes law plus Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling's historically challenging behavior.

Word of the Week [1:55]: Dr. Lisa expounds on "transmisogyny" as our WOW.

Phase 1 [6:20]: Voter Registration & Immigrants. Recently Dr. Lisa listened to an NPR podcast where journalist Miles Parks discussed how voter registration was introduced over 100 years ago to specifically make it harder for immigrants to vote. Lower voter registration numbers for immigrants and people of color is by design and we explain how attempts to continue this disenfranchisement are oversimplified in the media.

Phase 2 [18:09]: Coach Dawn Staley is Set Up. The incomparable Coach of the South Carolina Women's Basketball Team (NCAA Champs for 2024) was asked -- two days before finals -- about her stance on transgender women playing basketball. Allyship always comes at a cost, but we dissect how Coach Staley manages the resistance with conviction.

Phase 3 [29:45]: Resistance to Scotland's New Hate Crimes Law. Last week, Scotland introduced a new law protecting, among others, transgender people from offensive and harmful words and actions. The problematic author of the beloved Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling publicly and vehemently challenged the new bill by misgendering several trans people and then daring police to arrest her.
