Triple Consciousness

Per W.E.B. DuBois' work, The Souls of Black Folk (1903), the notion of double consciousness was used to describe psychological challenges of African Americans looking at oneself through the eyes of a white and racist society. Feeling one's "two-ness" was and is the challenge for Black folks. In today's episode, Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa invite you into triple consciousness -- self as a bystander, upstander, or othered.

Word of the Week [1:08]: Bystander Effect. Dr. Lisa starts with the deadly history of the term, while Dr. Shaunna provides an insufficient, but improved update.

Phase 1 [5:30]: DEI Training Doesn't Work. Ha! Fooled you. This is a little click bait, but let's be clear. Training on bias, racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression can work, but such training is doomed to fail without an ecosystem of accountability. Dr. Shaunna shares some of her experiences.

Phase 2 [17:40]: Immunity. Dr. Lisa dissects the SCOTUS case where 45 (whom we shall not name here!) claims he has absolute presidential immunity that has not been an issue for any past president, including the dubious ones (such as Nixon). This is due to an intentional and specifically American goal to create a country without a monarch or monarch-like leader with absolute power.

Phase 3 [34:34]: A Book Launch! Dr. Shaunna has been following the website "Conscious Style Guide" and their newsletters for years. Karen Yin who coined the phrase will drop her book on May 28. Dr. Shaunna being excited about this book is an understatement.
