Society as Patient

Word of the Week [1:10]: Tone Policing: If you've ever been "checked" about the way you said something rather than the content of what you said...you may have been tone policed. This is a diversion tactic and often used to silence folks who are most marginalized in the workplace.

Phase 1 [5:50]: Black Woman Employee Lifecycle: Although Black women have been feeling the pressure at "work" for centuries, a recent visual depicted some of their lived experiences and it has broken LinkedIn! Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa review the visual and share their analysis.

Phase 2 [19:00]: Society as a Patient: As Dr. Shaunna was reviewing some research on underserved communities, she came across this concept which reframes how we view the coping and resilience of individuals in a sick society. Dr. Lisa compares and contrasts the idea with the social model of disability.

Phase 3 [29:00]: Census Bureau Testing LGBTQIA+ Items: Shockingly (yet not) the U.S. Census’ American Community Survey (ACS) has not included questions about LGBTQIA+ communities in the past. Although the larger Census is conducted every ten years, the ACS is administered yearly. It gathers more detailed information on our communities than the Census. The data scientists at the Census are currently testing questions on sexual orientation for inclusion in the 2026 ACS. A long overdue inclusion to help us better understand the diversity of people who live in communities across the U.S.
