Girl Dads
Staying connected to Women's History Month, Dr. Lisa and Dr. Shaunna address some curious ideas like Girl Dad Night, renting white privilege and eventually retiring from DEI.
Phase 1 [1:40]: Lakers' "Girl Dad Night": In early March, the L.A. Lakers basketball team hosted a night highlighting father-daughter relationships. Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa pick apart this first-time event, proximity, and what is means to "discover" relationships that have been present for decades, yet rarely acknowledged.
Phase 2 [13:45]: Rent White Privilege for a Day: Wait, what? A recent satirical blog post considered what it would be like for a white person to rent out their privilege to someone who needs it. Dr. Lisa and Dr. Shaunna give a side eye to the notion of paying a white person for what is already a financial privilege; but even without compensation what would this look like in real time? We recall instances of power dynamics in movies and in real life when workarounds were used to circumvent racial advantages.
Phase 3 [26:45]: Retiring from DEI: Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa have been in the DEI space for decades...so when we read about a fellow colleague retiring at year 14, it was curious for us to consider. There are no plans to leave DEI anytime soon, however the hosts consider the current conditions that might encourage one to consider leaving the field and the transferrable skills if moving on.
