Aw[e]ful Memory

In this week's episode, Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa grapple with notions of gender, "Scouting America", collective memory, and vocational awe in religious work. They intertwine in many more ways than you may think.

Word of the Week: Dr. Lisa guides us through gender identity and gender expression -- yes, there is a difference!

Phase 1: "Scouting America": After years of change at the Boy Scouts of America, including the inclusion of LGBTQIA+ members, opening membership to girls, bankruptcy, and sexual misconduct, the name change is the newest headline.

Phase 2: Memories: Dr. Lisa kicks us off with a fascinating look at how memory is shaped over time and how our political and ideological positions may affect what and how we remember. Starting with recollections of the Trump presidency, Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa discuss how collective memory may intentionally diminish major life experiences and exaggerate others.

Phase 3: Vocational Awe in Religious Work: Recounting experiences with various nonprofit organizations, Dr. Shaunna brings back the exploitative characteristics of "vocational awe."  Discussion focuses on how often the inherent value of the work is used to belittle employees, shame employees for wanting more for good work, and excusing inappropriate compensation for doing "the Lord's work" and other good deeds that benefit others.
