Washed Up

This week, Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa explore how to create equitable philanthropic opportunities - it is more than just giving money, the erasure of core parts of a person’s identity because of white comfort, and the everyday reminders the world is not made for women.

Word of the Week [1:27]: In past [un]phased unedited episodes, "rainbow washing" has been addressed, but the term “—washing” can apply to many identities, including women - "pinkwashing", and climate advocacy - "greenwashing". Ultimately though, to wash is a form of performative support for a variety of social causes.

Phase 1 [6:12]: Melinda French Gates Gives $1B to Women. Just in case Melinda is listening, Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa offer some advice on how to donate the funds equitably, where those funds should go, and how to keep grant reporting low maintenance.

Phase 2 [16:34]: Whitewashing Pronouns & Tribal Affiliations. Under the auspices of "branding and communications standards", the University of South Dakota says faculty and staff may not note their pronouns and tribal affiliations in official communications. Dr. Lisa and Dr. Shaunna call bullsh*t on this and share social justice and higher education perspectives on the slippery slope of this requirement.

Phase 3 [29:40]: The "Everydayness" of Being a Woman: Dr. Shaunna's boys have been noticing gender inequities every day -- like no pockets in women's pants or the (in)convenience of toilet paper dispensers. We ponder how to ensure that such critical thinking and analysis continues into adulthood.
