Switchbacks
Have you heard of a switchback? It's that bend in the proverbial road that's usually a 180-degree or unusually sharp turn...and there are PLENTY of them in this week's episode.
Word of the Week [1:28]: Codeswitch: Are you "too tired to codeswitch?" This linguistic phenomenon turned covering approach is defined this week.
Phase 1 [4:57]: Matrilineal Names: In the U.S., names like Jr., Sr., III, and IV are not uncommon. Serena Williams' daughter -- Alexis Ohanian, Jr. -- was an interesting way to bestow a family name from father to daughter. Yet we haven't seen a matriarch's name pass down through the family tree. How do we feel about a Lisa, Jr.? Shaunna the V?
Phase 2 [16:58]: Anniversary Dates. The confluence of DEIJB anniversaries is upon us. The 70th Anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education, four-years since the murder of George Floyd as well as Asian siblings in Georgia, and the 75th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights are this year...yet anti-DEI legislation makes it feel like we haven't moved forward.
Phase 3 [28:15]: Work Therapy and Covering: Have we co-opted work therapy as the result of removing our "coverings" and choosing to codeswitch less at work? Or...is it possible for anyone to function without covering and codeswitching at work?
