Agency or Accountability?

This week, Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa talk about ERGs in the workplace and how we can engage in allyship or resist it. And why would an annual Self Care Day on our calendars really do anything to move the needle on workplace cultures?

Word of the Week [1:00]: Agency: No, we're not talking about a government organization. We’re talking about the sense of control that you feel in your life. Agency is crucial to change and interrupting bad, exclusive behaviors.

Phase 1 [3:20]: ERG: Employee Resources Groups aren't necessarily new, however what they can be for, why they are important, and how to set them up is its own science. Now, for the naysayer, Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa defend ERGs as more than just professional cliques.

Phase 2 [17:00]: Agency or Accountability: If you witnessed someone harm another person in the workplace, would you support them or would you back away from the situation? Dr. Shaunna argues that some may use "agency" as an excuse to avoid the discomfort of allyship, while Dr. Lisa doesn't have much faith in a person’s cultural fluency to even know to use “agency” as an excuse.

Phase 3 [29:45]: Self Care Day: How does one take care of themselves when the U.S. is sick with hyper-productivity, overwork, and a culture of busyness? Dr. Lisa and Dr. Shaunna chuckle at the idea of Self-Care Day which may reflect more on the issues of society than any one individual.
