Irksome!
In our first podcast back from our world travels, Dr. Lisa and Dr. Shaunna return to the U.S. irritated and frustrated. Don't worry -- and don't tone police them. (See what we did there?) This week shines a light on tough issues that require complex solutions. Listen in!
Word of the Week [0:45]: Christian Nationalism: This is an ideology that intentionally erases the line between church and state, encouraging heavy Christian influence and monolithic perspectives in all aspects of U.S. government, education, and culture. (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/what-is-christian-nationalism-and-why-it-raises-concerns-about-threats-to-democracy)
Phase 1: MEI [4:35]: Elon Musk has dropped more anti-DEI buzzwords like "merit, excellence, and intelligence" (MEI) as a response to diversity, equity, and inclusion. A leading voice in Human Resources -- SHRM -- drops the "equity" from their DEI verbiage, leaving LinkedIn in an uproar. Oh, there's more! CNN also dismantles their Race and Equality team, following the anti-DEI trend.
Phase 2 [21:10]: Toxic Tampons: Preliminary research suggests that low levels of arsenic and lead among other metals are found in tampons. There is little exploration of this issue including whether the presence of these metals is dangerous to people who use tampons. Research suggests the danger may be coming from the soil where the cotton products are grown, but the cumulative effects on menstruating people is yet to be determined.
Phase 3 [31:20]: Louisiana & the Ten Commandments: Again, in the myopic opinion of Christian nationalists, legislation committed to hanging the Ten Commandments in classroom is a priority, yet there is no systemic attention given or action taken to center the major values of compassion, care, or consideration for teachers, students, or their families.
