Reframe

This week, Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa focus on reframing. What can a well-placed reframe do and how can it help us think differently about the world? From sexual harassment in the workplace to the Olympics to politics, there is always a benefit to thinking about something from a different angle.

Word of the Week [1:50]: Paralympics. The Paralympics are about to start on August 28th, but do you know the meaning of the term?

Phase 1 [3:32]: Reframe. Prompted by a quote Dr. Shaunna saw on social media, she leads an exploration of what reframing is and how it can assist us in naming systems that perpetuate unequal and inequitable power relations. Reframing is akin to relearning and it can be hard to do.

Phase 2 [16:30]: Breaking. By now, you all have likely heard about or seen the infamous Raygun’s breaking routine from the Olympics. She represented Australia in the women’s Breaking competition and scored a whopping zero for one of her dances. Dr. Lisa and Dr. Shaunna discuss the larger cultural implications of a white woman going to the Olympics for this sport and why she may have believed she met the global standard expected for Olympic Breaking.

Phase 3 [30:45]: Cease and Desist. Many a celebrity has initiated legal action against Donald Trump for his unapproved usage of their music at his rallies. Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa discuss what is communicated when a musician takes such steps and how influential this kind of move can or could be in 2024.
