It’s Not That Simple

This week, Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa take on Covid and the Olympics, Hurricane Debby, and revisit the origins of “imposter syndrome.” There is a lot going on right now, so keep those DEI antennas at the ready!

Word of the Week [1:35]: Dog Whistle: If you follow politics and the news, we're sure you've heard this word before. Yes, there are literally high-pitched whistles that only dogs hear...but humans have created signals that we need to be aware of, too.

Phase 1 [6:00]: COVID at the Olympics: Hot off the presses, Dr. Shaunna reacts to Noah Lyles, Olympic Gold Medalist in the 100 meters by .005 seconds and his COVID diagnosis. Testing positive about 2 days before his attempt for double gold in both the 100 m and the 200 m, the reaction to his "after the fact" revelation has evoked strong and mixed feelings on the world stage.

Phase 2 [18:35]: The Roots of Imposter Syndrome: Although the team has addressed before, Dr. Lisa leads the discussion contemplating a new angle on this topic. What if imposter syndrome is merely the outcome of a lifetime of being dismissed and devalued based on one's identity?

Phase 3 [32:25]: Hurricane Debby's Effect on the Marginalized: Dr. Lisa and Dr. Shaunna have an acquaintance who is an expert in emergency response. Based on their conversations, it's clear that a natural disaster or violent weather affects historically marginalized people differently. They discuss the very real limitations for these groups and how we should all keep them top of mind when developing any kind of emergency preparedness plan.
