Identity Agility

This week, Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa take on identity – what does it mean and when does it tip over into labeling. How can cultural humility and honoring other cultural identities and traditions help us grow as humans? The team finishes up with some identity observations from the Olympics.

Word of the Week [1:52]: Identity: We know that people usually describe themselves based on what's most important to them in their current context. Dr. Lisa and Dr. Shaunna explain further -- it's complicated!

Phase 1 [4:10]: Culture Intolerance: As Dr. Shaunna recalls a fellow traveler during her recent educational tour to Japan, she finds linkages between the trip and a recent New York Times “party tip” telling people they should not ask others to remove their shoes when entering their home, because it’s rude. Cultural awareness is one thing, but cultural agility is another.

Phase 2 [15:29]: Labeling: During a recent online training, a participant was angry that he was asked to reflect on his identities and identity in general. Dr. Shaunna shares how she handled the tense interaction and how she might approach it differently next time (because there WILL be a next time!).

Phase 3 [27:10]: Olympic Commentator Ousted: Dr. Lisa CALLED it! During Episode 152: "Paris Olympics Special" she mentioned that we should listen for language that is inappropriate or minimizing for underrepresented groups. Lo and behold, Eurosport Commentator, Bob Ballard put his foot in his mouth regarding the Aussie women's swim team. Dr. Lisa also gives a last minute reminder to avoid inspiration porn given the recent awe that has been directed at Egyptian Olympian Nada Hafez's, who shared she competed while seven months pregnant.
