Hollow Pie
This week, the hosts delve into virtue signaling, the future of the beauty pageant, SCOTUS’ review of gender affirming care for minors, and whether a “becoming board” is a better option than a “vision board” as we think about the year ahead.
Word of the Week [1:15]: Virtue Signaling: Even if it is a humble brag, Dr. Lisa questions whether trying to bolster our egos publicly is simply performative.
Phase 1 [5:20]: Missing Miss Netherlands: After crowning the pageant's first ever transgender winner in 2023, the Netherland’s pageant leadership decided to end the 35-year institution of pageantry and replace it with an online platform. Coincidence? Serendipity? Or intentional? As a former pageant contestant, Dr. Shaunna revisits pageantry and the implications of this decision.
Phase 2 [17:40]: Gender Affirming Care and SCOTUS: In December 2024, SCOTUS heard a case out of Tennessee about the constitutionality of bans on gender affirming care for minors. Dr. Lisa recaps the arguments presented to SCOTUS. Are the bans a violation of the Equal Protection Clause and inherently about sex or are they just about banning a type of medical procedure? What the Court decides will have profound implications for nonbinary and transgender youth, their families, and their medical providers nationwide. History was also made in this case since Chase Strangio from the ACLU became the first trans attorney to argue in front of SCOTUS.
Phase 3 [29:15: The "Becoming Board": Vision boards have been in vogue for years, but the Drs. critique how the process of becoming is usually skipped. It is great to have a vision, but if you don’t have steps to get there, then what? As we become -- a la Michelle Obama – the hosts talk about how such a board might be useful both personally and organizationally.
